Carabanchel es un distrito de Madrid dividido en siete barrios: Comillas, Opañel, San Isidro, Vista Alegre, Puerta Bonita, Buenavista y Abrantes. Es a hía de hoy el distrito más poblado de la capital. Se encuentra situado al sur y limita con el río Manzanares y Arganzuela al norte, con Leganés al sur, al este con el distrito de Usera y al oeste con el de Latina. Toma el nombre de los municipios de Carabanchel Bajo y Carabanchel Alto, anexionados a la ciudad de Madrid en 1948.

Una de las teorías más aceptadas es la propuesta por Jaime Oliver Asín, al ser en estas tierras frecuente el cultivo del garbanzo, la voz «carab» es como se denominaba al propiestario de las tierras y de ahí derivó Carabanchel. Hay constancia del término desde el año 1181, un documento de cesión de la villa de Carabanchel a cargo de Pedro Manrique de Lara y su hermana María.
